Lucie Chan: Artist in Residence

About the Work

In July of 2023, artist Lucie Chan created a large-scale sketchbook in collaboration local community members of all ages. With each carefully co-developed page, image were transformed into multi-layered hybrid visuals. We invite visitors to enjoy looking through the giant finished sketchbook located in the middle of the Learning Centre and create new imagery in the assorted sketchbooks on the walls using art supplies located in the space. This ongoing collaborative project will transform and grow over time, reflecting the unique creative energy of our community.

About the Artist

Guyana-born Lucie Chan lives on Coast Salish Territories (Vancouver). Her multi-layered drawings often result from working with voluntary participants from the public. She has participated in solo, duo and group exhibitions across Canada such as Oxygen Art Centre, Centre for Asian Arts, National Art Gallery, Museum London, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, and Richmond Art Gallery to name a few, and participated in international residencies in Spain, Italy, Portugal, and France. She received the VIVA Award in 2020.

The Library of Continuous Image Making

Add your art to our ongoing collaborative community project!

We invite you to fill the pages of our assorted handmade sketchbooks in the BMO Learning Centre. Have some fun adding to this ongoing collaborative project of visualizing, making and remaking art.  In July of 2023, Artist-In-Residence: Lucie Chan created a large-scale sketchbook in collaboration with our local community. With each added and altered page, the images were transformed into multi-layered hybrid visuals. Please enjoy looking through the giant sketchbook. Turn the pages and discover the hidden surprises! Come back with your friends and family as often as you like and add to The Library of Continuous Image-Making until January 7, 2024.    

On the walls of the BMO Learning Centre, we provided a variety of handmade sketchbooks for all to creatively share.  

  • Enjoy looking through the images created by other visitors  
  • Pause when you find a page that appeals to you 
  • Layer on top of the image or start on a fresh page to create a new work of art with the supplies provided
