About the Film

Heart Berries is a retelling, in the form of a machinima (movies made in a virtual environment), of the Nehiyaw story about how strawberries came to be. It was created at our first-ever Skins Train-the-Trainer workshop, in partnership with AbTeC (Aboriginal Technologies in Cyberspace), back in August 2019. Over the five-day intensive course, three participants: Eve Whiteman-Desjarlais, Will Nadurak, and Ken Duczek, from the MacKenzie Gallery, and Waylon Wilson, a Research Assistant at AbTeC, learned how to facilitate two Skins workshops: 7th Gen Character Design and Machinima. If you caught the last MacKenzie machinima, How the Loon Got Its Walk, you’ll recognize that our version of the ever-tricky Wesakechak is back with more mischief!

Special thanks also to Janine Windolph, John Hampton, Skawennati, Nancy Townsend, Maize Longboat, Kahentawaks Tiewishaw, and Nahiyan Islam.
