Carey Shaw and Steph Krawchuk: Pin Wheel

Pin Wheel is a short film about the opportunities that await when we welcome the unexpected. At the centre of this story is Jules, a forty-year-old introverted 2SLGBTQ+ character whose routine is disrupted when a past acquaintance re-enters the picture. As the narrative unfolds, we follow Jules on a tender realization of their own vulnerability, even in a place where everyone is familiar in one way or another. 

From the first dialogue exchanged in the film – an “I just want to be alone” hanging heavy in the air between quarrelling lovers in a parking lot – we are reminded that emotional lives are complex and often contradictory. Part light-hearted drama and part celebration of solitude, Pin Wheel speaks of the universal themes of belonging and kinship that connect the most vulnerable and courageous among us.  

Pin Wheel was shot entirely in Saskatoon with a cast, crew, and musicians based in Saskatchewan. Making its premiere at the MacKenzie Art Gallery, Pin Wheel is the debut short by first-time filmmakers, Carey Shaw and Steph Krawchuk.
