Mindfulness and the Creative Spirit

September 8, 2012 to January 6, 2013
Organized by the MacKenzie Art Gallery

There are people who believe that the Mayan calendar predicts that on December 21, 2012, we will witness either the end of the world, or the beginning of a new era of spiritualism and peace. Preferring not to entertain thoughts of doom and destruction, we are then left with a very short period of time in which to consider, and prepare for, a major spiritual awakening. This is the inspiration for the permanent collection exhibition, Mindfulness and the Creative Spirit.

Lost in a world of instant information, advanced technology and the isolating entertainment of social networking, most days the idea of mindfulness seems a million megabytes away. It is far easier to tune in to electronic diversions than to become aware of our thoughts and actions in the present moment.

Mindfulness and the Creative Spirit examines art production that embodies principles such as living in harmony with oneself and the world, and participation in a process of observation, self-inquiry and mindful action. This exhibition is an opportunity for personal reflection. Guidance will be provided for visitors to explore mindfulness through a process of looking deeply at art from the MacKenzie’s permanent collection. Immersion in mindfulness is promoted as a way to begin observing your emotions and sensations, while being encouraged to express yourself creatively.
