You Are What You Eat

18 September 2008 – 22 February 2009

Food, as we all know, is more than fodder – it defines our identity as much as our homes or hairstyles. Not surprisingly, artists continue to find the subject irresistible, especially when they cast an eye on the rituals of everyday life.

The eight sculptors in this show – including such familiar names as David Gilhooly, David Thauberger and Victor Cicansky – give us everything from a wooden cake fit for a beaver’s wedding, to an overstuffed Thanksgiving “turkeyscape,” to a old-time prairie root cellar chock full of canned preserves. Fun, irreverent and funky, the artworks in this exhibition give a new appreciation of food and drink as intimate elements of our sense of self.
