MAGDANCE 3: art + dance

January 28 to April 10, 2016

MAGDANCE 3: art + dance is a residency program and series of related events, talks and exhibitions intended to create dynamic spaces of convergence between visual art and contemporary dance. It arose in response to a simple question: what would happen if one invited a contemporary dance company to stage their season in a public art gallery?
The ongoing response has taken the form of a public conversation sparked in 2011 with
Robin Poitras, Artistic & Managing Director of Regina’s renowned New Dance Horizons (NDH) and Timothy Long, Head Curator of the MacKenzie Art Gallery in an initial three-month residency and exhibition at the MacKenzie Art Gallery.

This public conversation offers visitors an opportunity to reflect on the deeper connections between contemporary dance and visual art. By inserting the “black box” of the dance studio into the “white cube” of the gallery, questions arise such as, “What does it mean to place a dance floor where sculpture usually sits, and an art exhibition where viewers usually rest as an audience of passive viewers?” “How does and invitation to ‘perform’ in the gallery change the perception of art and the world around us?” These, among countless other questions, reveal and blur the boundaries between stage and audience, and art and life.

One might also ask what it means to be truly interdisciplinary in art — a subject which Françoise Sullivan has probed with her provocative work for over sixty years. Alongside an exhibition of Sullivan’s works, the MacKenzie presents additional artworks that invite viewers to participate in this conversation — and physically interact with these works. One will find in adjacent galleries the Canadian premiere of Anthony McCall’s Line Describing a Cone 2.0 as well as Rodney LaTourelle’s The Stepped Form.

The exhibition Françoise Sullivan: Les Saisons Sullivan highlights paintings and photographs by renowned multi-disciplinary artist, Françoise Sullivan. A co-signatory of Le refus global, Sullivan has created works of dance, painting, sculpture, conceptual art and poetry. Notably, her early choreographic works are considered the precursors of post-modern dance in Québec. Her life and work are a testament to the boundless possibilities radiating from the convergence of artistic disciplines.

For MAGDANCE 3, New Dance Horizons will present its 30th anniversary season, featuring innovative dance performances by Fortier Danse-Création, Daniel Léveillé Danse, and Benoît Lachambre, choreographers and dancers with deep ties to the visual arts, as well as the Stream of Dance Festival, featuring a new collaboration by choreographer Helen Husak and visual artist Peter von Tiesenhausen, plus a host of related programs and events.

All MAGDANCE 3: art + dance events will be held at the MacKenzie Art Gallery unless otherwise noted.
